Heart of Deception

In the mood for a Historical Romance? I’ve got one for you.

Blurb

Intrigue and treachery stalk the grimy streets and the royal courts of Elizabethan England. Returning from war, Rafe Fletcher finds his family accused of conspiring to murder Elizabeth and place Mary, Queen of Scots, on her throne. His only hope to save them lies in infiltrating the criminal underworld of nefarious siblings Nick and Vivian Swift.

Rafe discovers it’s Viv who is the mastermind of the duo. Bold, clever and ruthless, Viv is also loyal and fiercely passionate. Rafe fights the intense magnetism that pulls him ever closer to destruction. But desire defies every warning he gives himself and they begin a blazing affair–until murder and betrayal severs their newly formed trust. Restoring that trust may be the only way Rafe can save the Queen, his own family, and the woman he’s come to love.

Their adventure takes them from the fledgling theatres of Shakespeare’s London to the desperate corridors of Bedlam, from the deadly backstreets of the Clink to the glittering court of Queen Elizabeth. It is a world of dark secrets and darker intrigues. Will the fire of their passion burn bright enough to incinerate the lies, and illuminate the truth?

And here’s an excerpt to further whet your appetite.

Prickling with the awareness of being watched, Rafe looked up to the house, his search stopping at a shadowy form behind the great bow window. He stared up at the window until the shadow moved forward. Circular panes sparkled in the sun as the central casements opened to reveal a woman watching. Dark and slender, she looked clothed in flame, her velvet gown a blaze of scarlet slashed with black. A shock went through Rafe as her glittering gaze met his own, then slowly browsed him from head to toe.

Used to seductive appraisal, flirtatious or serious, still he flushed at the flagrant assessment, and the heat that flashed through him seemed to ignite in her eyes, bright within their dark. Rafe had never seen a lady with so bold a glance, which mocked as it weighed, invited as it challenged. But no lady would be here among these criminals, though the woman gazing down at him knew how to dress the part. Rubies burned at her throat, and ropes of sparkling jet draped her vivid scarlet bodice. The distinctive garb, the total presumptuousness of the woman, made him tense with suspicion. Slowly, her gaze swept his body, scanning the breadth of his shoulders and assessing the strong muscles of his thighs. … The black eyes sought his again, and he stared back defiantly, icy anger running in cold currents against his hot arousal. Rafe felt more than provoked—he felt deliberately tested to see how long he could stand in the fire.

If a Genie granted me three wishes for my writing, what would they be?

Wish #1 – That I could write quickly. I’m a snail. I do have bursts of inspiration where the words pour out and chapter after chapter appears. It’s a great joy to experience that. But I’ll have weeks, months, when characters refuse to talk to me. It doesn’t matter if I know what they are supposed to do, what they are supposed to say, if they don’t come alive for me and do it on their own, my writing is flat and unbelievable. Sometimes I know something is wrong with the next chapter, but I don’t know what it is. Something little? Something big? I’ve learned that if I wait, what I need will come, but the wait can drive me crazy. My romances were professionally published but by the time I finished my first mystery, I gave up any plan to try pro publishing again and stay with small presses or self-publishing. I can’t write a book a year. The romances took about two years, the mysteries far longer. I’m proud of my books, but it would be nice to have created even more of them.

Wish #2 – I’ve often wished for clones of myself so that I could carry on with all my different obsessions. I’d like a clone just to do art. I’d like a clone who dances, a clone who acts, a clone who bakes, a clone who makes jewelry, and a clone who makes perfume. I would be very happy to just have the Genie give me a clone for my different writing projects – especially if I’m granted that first wish and can write quickly. I have more books in my head than I’ll ever be able to write. Some are still alive and vying for the chance to be the next book, but others have faded away, too close to an earlier time, place, emotion. Oh, for a clone…or six.

Lastly. Firstly? That by books would be made into movies—or into TV series. I do adore mini-series! I’ve loved books, movies, and television ever since I was a child. Also, I must phrase this wish to the Genie so that I can help choose the cast. My books are usually cast with favorite actors from the very beginning. Sometimes just a couple, other times several actors. I’ve even had tryouts for parts. I used to feel guilty that I was choosing favorite actors to embody my characters, that I wasn’t being original. Then I realized that many of my secondary characters sprang from my mind, like Athena popping out of Zeus’ brain. They appeared full grown and I usually knew everything about them, and they were well-behaved and did what they were told. But my actors were a lot more work. I was their director coaxing a certain quality they had in one film, something different from another. One actor was the hero in one romance, the villain in the next (well, a sexy villain). Sometimes they were a favorite actor but something didn’t work, often the voice was too modern, and I’d spend weeks slowly birthing that separate quality in the character I was creating, so that I could hear them or see them clearly. And because I’m a snail, I do keep recasting—not so much the book, as I see the characters as I first envisioned them, but in my mythical movies, I often have different casts for different decades. Part of me misses my perfect initial cast but I also love the fantasy game of picking new actors for the parts. Would the Genie let me move around in time to pick the perfect cast for each novel? I hope so.
